Dietz Jr. of Southbury, Connecticut, died peacefully in his sleep on January 5, 2020, at the age of 82. He was the only child of George W. Dietz Sr. and Justine Brenia Dietz, late of Heritage Village. He grew up in Westchester, New York, received a BA from Williams College in 1959 and earned a PhD in biochemistry from Yale. He did postdoctoral work at the Institut Pasteur in Paris and took his first academic position at Memorial Sloan-Kettering in New York. From there he became a senior neuroscientist at City of Hope Hospital in Duarte, California. He retired to Heritage Village. George was a lifelong bachelor, and is survived by his first cousins Dorothy Truman, Margaret Powers, John Wefer, Mary White, and Harold Wefer. I met George in the mid-1990s when I was playing in a jazz band at a local restaurant. He was an avid luthier and his skills were among the best. He worked on many of my guitars and he was also a great friend. He also showed me the cryogenic DNA container at the City of Hope.
