In Remembrance: Charlton G. Wilder ’86 Died on April 15 2019

Charlton Gerard Wilder died in Baltimore on April 15, 2019, at the age of 54.

Diagnosed with colon and liver cancer barely a month before he died, "Chuck" succumbed to a stroke. His funeral Mass was conducted at New All Saints Roman Catholic Church in Baltimore on April 24, 2019.

Chuck Wilder graduated from the Gilman School in Baltimore in 1982, where he was a gifted athlete. After Yale he pursued a career in financial services.  He obtained master’s degrees in economics and business administration.  Among his employers were Chase Bank in New York City and Fannie Mae in Washington, DC.

The youngest of three siblings, Chuck moved back to Baltimore around 2003 to care for his mother Consuella, afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease. She lived with her condition for many years and died at the age of 90 in November 2018.  

Chuck never married. His closest survivors are his brother Calvin Wilder Jr. and half-sister Stephanie Parker.

I got to know Chuck through mutual Catholic friends and activities.  Chuck and his mother were devout. He worked hard to make it possible for Consuella to attend Mass with considerable regularity until a few months before her death.  He shared her great love for the poor.

In some ways an intensely private person, in the last years of his life he enjoyed long telephone conversations and authored eloquent emails. He was a patient and thoughtful commentator on everything from national politics to basketball.  Before his final illness, he was looking forward to going back to work in the financial world. It is fair to say that he sacrificed his personal hopes so that his mother could live out her life with love and dignity.
