In Remembrance: Roger H. Unger ’45 Died on August 22 2020

Roger H. Unger MD, Yale ’45, died on August 22 at the age of 96. A professor of medicine at University of Texas Southwestern Medical School for more than 60 years, he pioneered diabetes research as author or coauthor of more than 500 published scientific papers, winning a dozen prestigious awards and honorary degrees from medical institutes around the world. “Dr. Unger was a visionary endocrinologist who helped shape research and clinical practice in the field of diabetes,” said Dr. Daniel K. Podolsky, president of UT-Southwestern. Roger came from a long line of distinguished physicians in the forefront of American medicine since the mid-nineteenth century. His wife Marlise and his brother, historian Harlow Giles Unger, Yale ’53, survive, as do four children.
