In Remembrance: Harold C. Costello Jr. ’52 Died on July 9 2022

Harold “Hal” Caldwell Costello Jr., class of 1952, passed away after a long illness on July 9, 2022, in Castelfranco (TV), Italy. Harold was born in Chicago, Illinois, on November 6, 1930, and moved to the Hidden Valley Ranch in Big Horn with his family in 1945. Harold was educated at St. John’s Military Academy, the Asheville School, Yale University, and Columbia Law School.  Between college and law school, Harold served in the US Naval Intelligence in Washington, DC, and on the USS Des Moines, the flagship of the 6th Fleet. After graduating from law school, Harold returned to Wyoming to practice law with the firm that is now Lonabaugh & Riggs.

In 1963, Harold left his law practice to move to Asolo (Treviso), Italy, where he purchased a rustic farmhouse and lived until his death. Harold eschewed modern conveniences and prided himself on his asceticism, traveling everywhere on his bicycle. His life was full and rich with his writing, art collecting, his garden, classical music, and his many, many friends. He is survived by his sister, Jane Costello Chase, his niece and her husband, William and Allison Woolston, and his two great-nephews, Hastings and Colyer Woolston.
