Mayer, a historian of Europe and the twentieth century whose theories were considered unconventional, died on December 17, 2023, in Princeton, New Jersey. He was 97. After earning his doctorate at Yale, he taught at Brandeis and Harvard Universities before settling at Princeton in 1961, where he remained until attaining emeritus status in 1993.
