In Remembrance: Carl R. Woese '52MS, '53PhD Died on December 30 2012

In the 1970s, Carl R. Woese and his University of Illinois colleagues discovered archaea, microbes that look like bacteria but in fact consituted a new domain of living creatures. Considered one of the great evolutionary biologists of the 20th century, Woese died at his home in Urbana, Ill., on December 30 of pancreatic cancer. A full obituary was published in the Los Angeles Times on January 22, 2013.
