Woese and his University of Illinois colleagues discovered archaea, microbes that look like bacteria but in fact consituted a new domain of living creatures. Considered one of the great evolutionary biologists of the 20th century, Woese died at his home in Urbana, Ill., on December 30 of pancreatic cancer. A full obituary was published in the Los Angeles Times on January 22, 2013.
