A teaching experiment

In fall 2020, faculty member Justin Garrett Moore convened an experimental seminar with students drawn from both the Yale School of Architecture and Morgan State University. The cross-institution course, titled Urban Difference and Change, examined the ways in which cities exemplify and perpetuate difference and inequality across race, class, and social lines. Working groups comprising Yale and Morgan State students took on cities around the world as case studies, analyzing the layers of legal, economic, and designed systems that perpetuate urban difference, and those that can potentially undo it. Following this success, YSoA collaborated on a spring 2021 course with Howard University.

Dean reappointed

Dean Deborah Berke has been reappointed for a second term by vote of the Yale Corporation, effective July 1. In her first term, Dean Berke led the school to a 60 percent increase in financial aid and toward a more diverse faculty and student body. Under her leadership, the multidisciplinary undergraduate urban studies major was created as well as the Center for Ecosystems in Architecture, an incubator for sustainable building technologies and materials headed by Hines Professor Anna Dyson.
