Mourning the loss of emeritus faculty

Keith Wilson, professor emeritus of clarinet, died peacefully on June 2 at the age of 96. Wilson was appointed in 1946 to the School of Music faculty, where he taught for over 40 years before retiring in 1987. During his tenure, he served as director of the Yale Bands, associate dean of the School of Music, and director of the Norfolk Summer School of Music. He was awarded the Sanford Medal and the Stoeckel Award. Dean Robert Blocker called Wilson “the embodiment of all the Yale School of Music stands for and hopes to be.”

New faculty appointments

David Hill has been appointed professor (adjunct) of choral conducting and principal conductor of the Yale Schola Cantorum in the Yale School of Music and the Institute of Sacred Music. Hannah Lash ’12ArtA has been appointed as assistant professor, adjunct, of composition. 

Alumni honors and achievements

Composer David Kurtz ’80MusM won two Emmy Awards this year. Kurtz and his collaborator Jack Allocco won for Outstanding Achievement in Music Direction and Composition for a Drama Series, for their work on The Bold and the Beautiful on CBS. Kurtz and lyricist Allocco also won the award for Outstanding Original Song for a Drama Series, for their song “Only Love Goes on Forever” on CBS’s The Young and the Restless. Kurtz is the winner of several previous Emmy Awards for his work in television. 

Pianist Sean Chen ’13ArtA won third prize (Crystal Award) in the prestigious Cliburn International Piano Competition, held in San Antonio in June. Chen was the first American to reach the finals of the Cliburn since Jon Nakamatsu in 1997. Earlier this year, he won the American Pianists Association’s 2013 Christel DeHaan Classical Fellowship. Leelanee Sterrett ’10MusM has been appointed to the position of assistant principal horn with the New York Philharmonic. Sterrett is a former fellow of The Academy/Ensemble ACJW.
