Music complex to be named for benefactors

At Convocation on September 9, Dean Robert Blocker and President Peter Salovey announced that the music complex centered around the renovated and expanded Hendrie Hall will be known as the Adams Center for Musical Arts when it opens in 2016. In 1999, Stephen Adams ’59 and Denise Adams donated $10 million to the School of Music, then the largest contribution the school had ever received. Six years later, they gave a transformative gift of $100 million, originally made anonymously. This gift allowed all School of Music students from that point onward to attend tuition-free, and also enhanced programs at the school. The Adamses recently made a $10 million pledge toward the renovation of Hendrie Hall.

Metropolitan Opera manager honored

Peter Gelb ’77, general manager of the Metropolitan Opera, accepted the Samuel Simons Sanford Award—the highest honor that the School of Music can bestow—at Convocation. Under Gelb’s leadership, the Met in 2006 began broadcasting selected performances live in high definition around the world. Beginning in 2010, the Yale School of Music began offering these broadcasts on campus, open to members of the Yale community and free of charge, thanks to a gift from Frederick Iseman ’74.

Met Opera on demand

Thanks to the generosity of Yale alumnus Frederick Iseman ’74, the Yale School of Music and the Gilmore Music Library now offer Met Opera on Demand: Student Access. Met Opera on Demand includes dozens of productions from the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, classic Met telecasts from 1977 to 2001, and over 300 radio broadcast performances dating back to 1936.

Inaugural concert

The School of Music presented a concert on Friday, October 11 in honor of Peter Salovey’s inauguration as the 23rd president of Yale. The celebratory concert brought together musical forces from across the university, including the Yale Philharmonia, Yale Camerata, and Yale Cellos, as well as the undergraduate Yale Concert Band, Yale Glee Club, and Yale Symphony Orchestra.

Correction: The School Notes in the September/October issue mistakenly listed the location of the Cliburn International Piano Competition. It takes place at Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth, Texas.
