YSN mourns passing of former dean

YSN professor Donna Diers, dean and Annie Goodrich Professor Emeritus, died on February 24 at Yale–New Haven Hospital. She was 74. Having helped revolutionize graduate nursing education, Dr. Diers made myriad contributions to nursing and nursing education. She helped to develop methods for nursing research, wrote the first textbook on the subject, and was also recognized for her work on the policy and politics of advanced practice nursing. An American Academy of Nursing Living Legend, Dr. Diers served as the sixth dean of the school, from 1972 to 1985. A memorial service was held April 23 at Battell Chapel. Associate dean appointed to named professorship

Barbara Guthrie was recently designated as the Independence Foundation Professor of Nursing at Yale. Her research focuses on health promotion and risk reduction programs for adolescent girls from diverse ethnic, social, and environmental backgrounds. She is currently the principal investigator of the HIV/AIDS summer intensive program titled Research Education Institute for Diverse Scholars, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, and is also an investigator on the Community Research Core at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS.

Dedication of new YSN campus is October 4

Construction and renovations are progressing on schedule at YSN’s new home on the university’s West Campus, with the move to take place starting on August 1. The official dedication and ribbon cutting is set for Friday, October 4, which will coincide with the celebration of YSN’s 90th anniversary and the annual alumnae/i weekend (October 4–5). A gala dinner is planned for October 5, including the naming of YSN’s “90 Nurses for 90 Years,” as nominated by fellow alums.
