Annual concert recognizes former Morse master

The Yale Jazz Ensemble and the Reunion Jazz Ensemble were featured in the 2018 Stan Wheeler Memorial Jazz Concert on April 8. The concert, presented by Yale Law School and Yale University Bands, was the 11th annual concert dedicated to the memory of Stanton Wheeler, a former master of Morse College and a member of the Yale Law School faculty. Reunion is a group of Yale alumni who, along with Wheeler (a trumpeter), were members of the Yale jazz scene in the 1970s. Wheeler continued to play with the Yale Jazz Ensemble until his death in 2007.

Addressing Africa’s sanitation crisis

In March, President Peter Salovey toured Sanergy, a manufacturing facility in Nairobi, Kenya, founded by David Auerbach ’03 and Lindsay Stradley ’03. Sanergy fosters healthy communities by manufacturing and installing sanitation systems that are affordable and accessible—not only in Nairobi, but throughout other areas of Africa. The company builds and franchises its own brand of innovative sanitation facilities in local communities, where they are run as viable businesses. Salovey’s visit to the startup company was part of his six-day visit to Ghana and Kenya with Yale faculty and staff.

Alumnus creates nursing PhD scholarship

A gift from James Leitner ’75 will establish a Yale School of Nursing scholarship in support of a PhD student from an international or diverse background. A member of the
nursing school’s Dean’s Leadership Council, Leitner is an avid supporter of global health and an enthusiast for the school’s ongoing work to advance a diverse student and
faculty population.

Leitner’s support for the School of Nursing is the latest of his gifts that have benefited multiple sectors of the university, including astronomy, engineering, and Pierson College. He also funded a professorship and several internships at the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies.
