Three named Marshall scholars
Three Yale College seniors—Michael Chen, Bayan Galal, and Alex Hu—have been awarded Marshall Scholarships, which fund up to three years of graduate study in the United Kingdom for Americans poised to become leaders in their fields. Michael Chen ’23 studies ethnicity, race, and migration and political science; as a Marshall Scholar, he will pursue an MSc degree in migration studies at the University of Oxford. Bayan Galal ’23 is a premed student double majoring in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology and global affairs; she plans to pursue a career in both medicine and global health and will pursue an MSc degree in international health and tropical medicine at the University of Oxford. Alex Hu ’23 is a humanities major; as a Marshall Scholar, he plans to study the geopolitics of the internet at King’s College London through MA programs in war studies and geopolitics, resources, and territory.
Students, alumni to study in China as Schwarzman Scholars
Two Yale seniors and two alumni have been selected as 2023 Schwarzman Scholars for graduate study in China. Seniors Mathis Bitton and Putt Punyagupta and alumni Jonas Kavaliauskas ’21 and Namra Zulfiqar ’21 were chosen for the fellowships, which fund one year of study in pursuit of a master’s degree in global affairs at Schwarzman College on the campus of Tsinghua University in Beijing. They will complete their studies during the 2023–24 academic year. Mathis Bitton ’23 is in the BA/MA program in political science and studies Confucian thought’s impact on Chinese statesmanship. Putt Punyagupta ’23 is majoring in history and South Asian studies, and is interested in the legal, religious, and linguistic pluralisms of South Asia. Jonas Kavaliauskas majored in economics and computer science and is the founder and CEO of Atlas Academy, a European education consulting company. Namra Zulfiqar studied political science and global human rights crises and wrote her senior thesis on international responses to the Jammu and Kashmir crisis.
