The House turns 55
The Afro American Cultural Center at Yale, fondly known as The House, held its 55th anniversary celebration March 28–30. Under the theme “A House Built to Last: Celebrating Our Past While Planning for a Sustainable Future,” the events of the weekend included a performing arts showcase spotlighting alumni and students; lectures and panels featuring alumni, current students, community members, and faculty; and a gala at the Omni. Friday evening’s Celebration of the Arts was headlined by Kevin “K.O.” Olusola ’11 of Grammy Award–winning group Pentatonix. Saturday’s keynote address was delivered by Dr. Elizabeth Alexander ’84.
Superstar superpower comes to campus
On February 26, Yale Schwarzman Center hosted “Dynamic Duo,” a conversation with Hollywood director-producer Shawn Levy ’89 and actor-producer Ryan Reynolds, moderated by film critic Kevin McCarthy in Woolsey Hall. An audience of 2,500 heard behind-the-scenes tales of creativity and partnership and watched film clips from the duo’s collaborative process.
Yalies awarded for international study and scholarship
Emma Yanai, a Yale College senior, won a Marshall Scholarship to fund her MA in postcolonial studies and Korean intensive language at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. Senior Naina Agrawal-Hardin received a Gates-Cambridge Scholarship to pursue an MPhil in Anthropocene studies at Cambridge. Noemi Guerra, a 2024 graduate, and Andy Nilipour, a senior, are Churchill Scholars. Yale had 97 students recommended as Fulbright semifinalists, the highest number ever received.
