NBC newsman Bazell to join Yale biology faculty

After nearly 40 years in TV news, Robert Bazell is leaving NBC to join the Yale faculty.

Bazell, the chief science and health correspondent for NBC News, told his colleagues on Friday that he'll become an adjunct professor in Yale's Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology.

A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, Bazell earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and did doctoral work in immunology. During 38 years at NBC News, he reported on the early AIDS epidemic and on medical care during crises such as Hurricane Katrina, the Iraq war, and the Haitian earthquake.

Bazell's scads of journalism awards include five Emmys, an Alfred I. DuPont Award, an Edward R. Murrow Award, a Gracie, and a Peabody. His book HER-2: The Making of Herceptin, a Revolutionary Treatment for Breast Cancer, was made into a Lifetime Television movie, Living Proof, starring Harry Connick Jr.
