Weekly sports roundup: Quinnipiac blanks Yale men's hockey, 4–0

Almost a year after it beat Quinnipiac 4–0 at the NCAA championships, the No. 13 men's ice hockey team lost to the No. 4 Bobcats by the same score this weekend. Four different Quinnipiac players scored goals and the team's goalie defended each of Yale's 33 shots. After that loss, the Bulldogs went on to defeat Princeton on Saturday, 7–5.

A stellar season came to an impressive end for the men's squash team. The No. 3 Bulldogs (16–3, 6–1 Ivy) took third place at the CSA Team Championships this weekend, up from last year's fourth-place finish. On the way, the team beat No. 6 Rochester on Friday with a score of 5–4, fell to No. 2 Trinity, 8–1, in the semifinal round the next day, and then defeated Franklin and Marshall, 7–2, in the consolation round on Sunday.

Six straight Ivy wins for the men's basketball team have pushed the Bulldogs (13–9, 7–1 Ivy) to the top of the conference standings, tied with Harvard for No. 1. The team defeated Penn, 69–54, on Friday and then took down Princeton in a 66–65 overtime victory on Saturday. Yale's 7–1 Ivy record is the team's best season start since 2001-’02.

The women's ice hockey team had one of its strongest weeks of the season. A 2–0 deficit against No. 10 Quinnipiac midway through the second period proved no match for the Bulldogs (8–13–6, 6–8–6 ECAC), who ultimately rallied for a 3–3 overtime tie. The next day, on Saturday, Jackie Raines ’15 scored four goals in a game against Princeton, pushing Yale into a 5–3 victory. The Bulldogs have now earned their fourth spot in the ECAC playoffs since 2008.

After a difficult weekend at the ECAC Division I Indoor Championships, the No. 34 women's tennis team blanked Boston University, 7–0. All six singles matches were decided in just two sets. This weekend, the team heads to Montgomery, Alabama, for the Blue Gray Invite.

Although the women's track and field team finished third with 41.50 points at this year's HYP indoor meet, Yale finished first in four events, and three different athletes moved up in all-time team rankings. Emily Cable ’15 took first place in the 400-meter dash, Emily Urciuoli ’14 won the pole vault, Alisha Jordan ’15 claimed first in the long jump, and Karleh Wilson ’16 won the weight throw.

The men's track and field team did not do as well at the meet: it also finished third, but with 26 points. Marc-Andre Alexandre ’17 put forth the day's strongest performance. He claimed first in the 400-meter dash, making a second-best time of 48:01 and claiming the all-time HYP meet record in the event. Only two of 14 other runners finished within two seconds of Alexandre.

Despite a strong start to conference play over the past few weeks, the women's basketball team is slipping in the standings. The Bulldogs (10–12, 4–4 Ivy) fell to Penn by a score of 62–50 and then went on to lose to Princeton, 96–75. But the team still has a chance to redeem itself: six conference games remain this season.

Taking on two other schools, the women's gymnastics team finished third at a meet this weekend with a score of 188.550. The University of Maryland and Bowling Green State University took first and second places, respectively. After missing her entire freshman season due to injury, Camilla Opperman ’16 tied her career-best score on the floor exercise with a 9.725. Next up for the team: the 2014 Ivy Classic, hosted by Brown next weekend.
