Ivy League senate battle on the Last FrontierAlaska Republicans will go to the polls next month to choose a Senate candidate to face incumbent Democrat Mark Begich in November. Since polling in the state is known to be unreliable, it’s hard to say who is going to win, but it will certainly be a man with an Ivy League diploma. Yale Law School grad Joe Miller ’95JD, a Tea Party–backed candidate who won a surprise primary victory over incumbent Lisa Murkowski in 2010 but lost to Murkowski in the general election, is running again. He has company in lieutenant governor Mead Treadwell ’78, a Connecticut native and graduate of Yale College and Harvard Business School. The third candidate, thought to be the front-runner, is former state attorney general Dan Sullivan, who got his undergraduate degree from Harvard and his law degree from Georgetown. Whether the unofficial Yale Club of Capitol Hill gets a new member next year depends also on the general election, though, and whether Begich can hold on to his seat is seen as pretty much a tossup so far. ___________________________________________ The Yale Alumni Magazine is published by Yale Alumni Publications Inc., an alumni-based nonprofit that is not run by Yale University.
