Throwback Thursday: shorts subject

In 1942, Yale was getting onto its wartime footing, which among other things meant starting the new academic year in the heat of July. When freshmen in the Class of ’45W discovered they wouldn't be admitted to Commons wearing shorts, a campuswide debate ensued. Our magazine didn’t offer an opinion on the issue, only this cover photo of freshmen Travers O’Rourke and John F. Riddell III. We report; you decide.
